Membership Structure

Ordinary Member
This is the level at which every member starts, and it’s the point where you need to read what you are signing up to. Ordinary Membership of the IOV comes with some obligations – as every member must agree to act and abide by our Code of Practice. Not only does this document define the conduct customers will expect from our members, but it also acts as a bond between professionals with a common goal.
Ordinary Members enjoy all the financial, practical and support benefits of membership – with the exception of being able to fully exploit their membership for commercial gain. To use the IOV logo, and eventually be promoted by the IOV, members must demonstrate levels of competency through IOV Accreditation. The initial stage involves passing an online exam, and from there progresses on to submitting samples of work to be assessed by a panel to gain further levels of Accreditation.

The Institute of Videography has a number of previously awarded Associate Members as valid current paid up members.
Associate Membership was awarded to members once they have demonstrated their knowledge of the IOV’s VideoSkills syllabus covering the Core Competencies of Videography. This level of membership demonstrates a basic understanding of the craft skills, business and legal issues that the IOV believes you need to know in order to operate commercially and safely.
Existing Associate Members who use the Associate Member logo on their website must mention this is their website and any correspondence

Online Learning and Exam
The VideoSkills online study section is partly freely open to members and non-members alike. The only exclusion is that non-members cannot take the online exam. Members wishing to take the exam will be charged a nominal exam fee details of which are available from the VideoSkills website. On passing the online exam the member is issued with a Completion Certificate and may then progress to the next stage of Full Accreditation.

Full IOV Accreditation
Once you have passed the IOV Online Learning exam you will be able to apply for Full Accreditation within two-years of your pass date. This is based on submission of work as set out in the Assessment Criteria (www.iov.com/assessment). There is a nominal Assessment Fee for this service (see below).
If the gap is more than two-years, you will have to first re-take and pass the Online Learning and Exam, which will cost another £35 for the online exam fee. Failure to pass the Full Accreditation assessment, or if you do not apply for Full Accreditation within two-years, will mean you remain as an Ordinary Member.

There are three variations of fully Accredited Members:

VideoSKills Master Membership
This is awarded to individuals who gain 70% or above in their assessment, and is aimed at those operating a general practice videography business. Submissions must be predominantly the work of the submitting member – or they should be the overall influence in the production. Assessment Fee is £45.00.

Fellow Membership
This is awarded to individuals who gain above 90% in their initial assessment, and then supply two further submissions of the same standard. Fellow Membership is also aimed at those operating a general practice videography business. Submissions must be predominantly the work of the submitting member – or they should be the overall influence in the production. Assessment Fee is £66.50 for the two additional submissions.

  Corporate Membership
This is awarded to the members’ business name and is achieved by supplying three samples of work for assessment which must each achieve 90% or above. Corporate Membership is aimed at larger production companies who may have a high turnover of creative staff. Assessment Fee is £87 for the three submissions

Student Membership (concessionary)
Student Members are entitled to all membership benefits, with the exception the benefit of our free Arbitration service. A Student Member may remain a Student Member as long as they can provide proof of attendance at a full time college or university course relating to videography or video production.
