I believe that once the Epson cart is dead (ha, still ink inside) you then insert the Marrutt supplied one. What I’m not so clear about is that the printers own ink status can’t then be relied on so topping-up (once a week?) means removing the cart to access the amount that needs refilling then replacing from a bottle via a syringe.
